Kent · above the Stour · planted 2016

Wine from the wrong slope.

Four hectares of Bacchus, Ortega, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on a cold chalk bank. The estuary keeps the frost off the lower rows. Three wines, sold from the shed.

In the cellar now.

Nothing else is for sale. If the bottle is on the table on Saturday, you can take it home.

Chalk, flint, and a hornbeam hedge that does most of the work.

The ground

A slope that never quite sees the midday sun.

That was a mistake in the planting plan and a gift in hot years. Bacchus and Ortega sit on the upper bank. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are lower, where the river fog sits until ten in the morning.

We pick by hand into baskets of twelve kilos. The 2025 Bacchus came in on 28 September, after a wet June and a September that finally behaved.
